Tweetea by the Numbers

Tuesday, April 19, 2011 was a special night for TWEETEA. While every TWEETEA is special, this night was the first night TWEETEA was held in Columbus, Ohio. Hubert made the trek to Columbus and engaged with our midwestern neighbors.

The thought-provoking question posed for all TWEETEA gatherings was, “Is social media actually contributing to a social and economic divide?”

Here’s your quick breakdown:

Total Tweets: 248
Total Retweets (using RT or via): 46
Total Distinct Tweets (Tweets – Retweets): 202
Distinct Users: 44

Remember, these numbers are best guesstimates from results gleaned by scripts using Twitter’s search and streaming APIs.

Here are just a couple of the many noteworthy tweets from the virtual conversation:

My Journey to a Columbus TWEETEA

My Journey to a Columbus TWEETEA

Photo by Kevin DooleyI recently made a bold move. It may not seem like a bold move to most, but it was for me. While I am not a stranger to taking action, I find myself struggling – at times – to being a man of my word. On Tuesday, April 19th, I broke a streak that did not seem as if it would ever be broken. I actually went to Ohio to just. Visit.

It all started with a purchase of two tickets to see Minnesotan hip hop group Atmosphere at Newport Music Hall.

I bought two tickets with the idea that I could get a close friend to join me. My plan was to take the drive to Columbus on the same day of the show, possibly stay overnight if we got tired, but not two days. When I could not find a suitable travel companion, I realized that I had a much better opportunity on my hands.

See, since the late 20th century, I have been connecting with fans of hip hop on Internet forums. While people from all over the world would use the forums, I always liked the ones that kept a solid roster of Midwesterners. Guys [and a few gals] would connect In Real Life (IRL) at events like Scribble Jam. That is where the buck stopped for me though. I never went to a Scribble Jam. Catapult some ten-plus years later, there is nothing I enjoy more than meeting people IRL that I made initial contact with on the interwebs.

When I found myself with two tickets and no one to join me from Detroit, I thought it was a good time to do something I have been promising (for what seems like forever) certain Internet chums from Ohio – paying them a visit. As I type this, I am scrambling to come up with a sexy reason for why it has taken me so long to actually make the easy drive to Columbus that has been made by many that I have come to know via forums, Twitter and Facebook. There is nothing sexy about double talk, fear and lack of real drive though. Making the three-and-a-half hour trek had me feeling instantly lame once I saw how smooth it was. Then add the hospitality of the likes of Mike Whaling, Anand Khurma and Nate Riggs and I begin to feel really silly.

Hubert, Eryka and Nate at TWEETEA

Tuesday, April 19th at MoJoe Lounge in German Village marked the first TWEETEA in Columbus. In addition to Mike, Nate and Anand, I also got the pleasure to meet Dr. Erika Pryor, Alisha Bicknell and Heather Whaling. The conversation flowed so easily, I wish it could have lasted longer. In the short time I had with the group, I learned about the Ohio Growth Summit, Talktainment, dissertation coaches and PR 2.0 chat (#pr20chat). We even had quality discussions on the varied interpretations of entrepreneurship and the plight of the social media strategist.

After everything was set and done with TWEETEA, I realized that Columbus is a place I need to visit more often. I know I will only be scratching the surface with the IRL first encounters in my two days here. I was so taken by  South Third Street, which MoJoe Lounge resides, that I wished I had gotten in sooner to explore a little more. While the Columbus crew will downplay the coolness of their college town, I find it quite the delightful place. That being said, it is always good to get away and see new things.

I could go on and on about my musings related to my trip to Columbus, but I will leave with this nugget. As trite as it is, do not put off what you could do today for tomorrow. The task is not usually as arduous once you have done it. I learned that for the 4082nd time this past week. As our Ohioan neighbors have shown time and time again, a trip between our states is not that tough, so like Nike, “just do it.”

Chrysler Comes to TWEETEA on Tuesday, April 5th

If you have yet to attended a TWEETEA, this is going to be your best time to partake! One of Metro Detroit’s biggest companies is joining us – CHRYSLER! We are gathering at Tracey’s Corner Cafe in Warren, MI.

Chrysler - Imported from Detroit logo

Here’s the rundown from the TWEETEA newsletter and Facebook page:

On Tuesday, April 5th, TWEETEA will have the distinct pleasure of playing host to members of Chrysler’s social media team. With Ed Garsten, Head of Electronic Communications for Chrysler Group, Mike Driehorst, Editorial Director – Online Media, and others, we will get the opportunity to talk about how Chrysler uses social media to connect with current and future customers, the recent F-bomb tweet incident, “imported from Detroit” and other related social-media-meets-community topics.

This evening marks the first time a company as large as Chrysler has engaged the TWEETEA community. We hope you will join us to show Chrysler how much we appreciate their team joining TWEETEA to discuss how a large corporate brand uses social media. Come prepared to learn and ask questions!

Special thanks to Nikki Stephan for making this happen!

The Farmhouse experience

When it comes to Tuesday’s Tweetea the one thing I always look forward to is the Farmhouse, the atmosphere is cozy quiet and overall enjoyable.  The staff are probably the nicest people ever and on top of that the wireless is amazing, we have had a ton of people on it & all are surfing at amazing speeds.

As for this week, it was no different. Arriving a few hours early, I am greeted warmly by the staff & I find my place in my usual spot. Around start time Sola rolled in, with her usual greeting, “what up E” with Hadi following shortly behind. Much of our chit chat this week revolved around Social Media Week, which Sola recently returned from being on staff and occasionally the evenings topic finds its way into the discussion.

This week like many other weeks we basicly just talk about anything and everything, whats going on in each others lives, what kind of cool things someone has found, basically whatever is on your mind.

If you ever decide to visit Tweetea at the Farmhouse, you can always expect it to be just time to unwind, we like to enjoy each others company and are always very excited for new visitors.

The topic wrap-up

For those that were not able to participate with Tuesday night’s TWEETEA, it was a very full night. There were actually two discussions that took place, one being the debated RoboCop statue and the other JC Penney and their use of black hat SEO.

If you are not up-to-date with either story, here is a couple links to give you reference.

Mayor Bing: Detroit won’t build RoboCop statue via Detroit Free Press

The Dirty Little Secrets of Search via NY Times

Now, being that I can only keep up with so much of what was discussed last night here are some great visuals to fight off our Datafetishism tendencies (thanks for the word @Davezilla). I would like to note that tweets used may not reflect the individual’s actual opinion, they are used to highlight each side of the discussion.

By the Numbers (I know, this only aids our fetish towards data)

  • 263 tweets
  • 61 contributors
  • 37.6 tweets per day
  • 56.7% come from “The Top 10″
  • 21.7% are retweets
  • 76.8% are mentions
  • 19.4% have multiple hashtags

Tweetea By the Numbers

Tweetea By the Numbers

This week’s Tweetea was a freestyle Tweetea, if you will. There was no set topic for the entirety of the Tweetea attendees. Being that this is the third week of counting stats, we have a little information under our belts to analyze some data. The one thing I can see thus far is that the online conversation is much more abundant when we have a set topic.

Although there wasn’t a set topic, Nikki Stephan posed an excellent first question surrounding Chrysler’s Super Bowl commercial which featured Eminem and our beloved city, Detroit. Being that Tweetea was a mere two days after the Super Bowl, people were still pretty fired up about the commercial. Chrysler’s twitter account also joined in on the virtual conversation. It will definitely be interesting to see what long term effects, if any, the ad will have on the city, as well as the brand.

Discussion also centered around whether the benefits of calculated bad publicity are worth the risks. I think it’s safe to say that the general consensus was no.

So, now for a quick breakdown:

Total Tweets: 122
Total Retweets (using RT or via): 20
Total Distinct Tweets (Tweets – Retweets): 102
Distinct Users: 35

Remember, these numbers are best guesstimates from results gleaned by scripts using Twitter’s search and streaming APIs.

Here are a couple of notable tweets that resulted from the discussion:

Tweetea By the Numbers

Tweetea By the Numbers

You’ve all heard the saying – to err is human, but to really screw things up, you need a computer. With that being said, I’d like to present a data disclaimer.

<geekspeak>The data you see here is typically retrieved via Twitter’s streaming API. However, at times the results returned aren’t complete. After analyzing the results, we may also utilize Twitter’s search API. However, the search API results aren’t always complete, either. When we have inconsistencies (that seem to mostly affect usernames present), we’ll combine the two. Because of this, please consider these results best guess estimates.

Also note, there’s more than one way to skin the proverbial cat when it comes to retweets. You can retweet a tweet old school style by placing an RT or via in the tweet, or you can retweet using Twitter’s “native retweet” functionality. Our retweet counts will only include old school retweets. Since we have so many awesome tweets, people often retweet other people’s retweets. With all those retweets going on, it gets a little wacky when it comes to calculating the stats. The same goes for users present and accounted for.

During the #tweetea of February 1, 2011, we noticed certain users weren’t coming through in the #tweetea stream, even though they used the #tweetea hashtag. If you’re not on the “Users present and accounted for” list, it’s nothing personal – just remember, to err is human, but to really screw things up, you need a computer.</geekspeak>

Now that you’ve been debriefed, let’s get down to business…

The first #tweetea of February was a virtual #tweetea. Those of us in Southeastern Michigan found ourselves in a blizzard warning that was dubbed Snowpocalypse, Snotorious B.I.G., and Snowmageddon, among other creative names. Rather than braving the roads, we took to our computers and smartphones, enjoying spirited conversation surrounding Art and Commerce.

Here’s the breakdown:

Total Tweets: 347
Total Retweets (using RT or via): 66
Total Distinct Tweets (Tweets – Retweets): 281
Distinct Users: 54

Some notable tweets of the evening included:

“The most success comes from combining art and business. The artists need to learn business…and businesses need to be creative. #tweetea,” declared @WorldClothesLin.

Recipe for Success

“I consider myself a business woman and an artist…I don’t subscribe to the mentality that we have to starve to be authentic #tweetea,” tweeted Taramichener.
We don't have to starve to be authentic!

“We may never agree what art is, but we can agree artists are makers, & their unique skills can help build a business. #tweetea,” was a sentiment by streetculture which was echoed by many.
Artists can help build a business!
